"The Art of Story Telling"

An exhibit of paintings by Victor Nizovtsev, a Russian-American oil painter. Inspiration for Victor's art comes from all he sees and touches. It can be Greek methodology, Russian folklore, childhood impressions, great Masters of the past, or routine daily life. This exhibit opens on Friday, August 15th-August 31st.
The reception to meet the artist, Victor Nizovtsev and see his painting demonstration is the evening of the Annual Annapolis Art Walk on Thursday, August 21st from 5 - 9pm.

Seeking Liberty: Annapolis, An Imagined Community

In 2008, the right to citizen-elected representation in Annapolis will be 300 years old. The city charter granted to Annapolis in 1708 gave the city political reality. With this exhibit we commemorate the current anniversary by celebrating the quest for liberty. Many of these artifacts have never been on display for the public before this. Visit the exhibit which will be on display at the Banneker-Douglas Museum in Annapolis from February through November 2008. There will also be a few smaller exhibits open to the public at some of the sites involved in the exhibit. The exhibition was funded by a grant from Preserve America. This exhibition features a free cell phone audio tour generously funded by a grant from the Four Rivers Heritage Area.

This lecture will introduce the history of Japanese Imari porcelain from its inception near the beginning of the 17th century to the early 20th century. The discussion will cover the ebb and flow of Imari porcelain to the West, along with the evolution of shape, color and decoration. Matthew Baer, founder of Ivory Tower, Inc. For the past 15 years, Matthew has been handling Asian ceramics 'eight days a week.' His tremendous hands-on experience combined with the depth of his research make him an expert in the field.

A Journey of Artistic Splendor: 20th Century Jewelry Design lecture

The 20th century represents the most diverse period in the history of jewelry design, from the elegance and splendor of the Edwardian era to the exotic motifs and geometry of the Art Deco period to the bold gold creations of the 1940's. Gus Davis of Camilla Dietz Bergeron, Ltd. will explore these expressive decades, when jewels became not only objects of personal adornment but a true art form. Gus Davis is a partner and co-founder of New York based antique and estate jewelry firm Camilla Dietz Bergeron, Ltd. He specializes in colored stones, such as fine Burma rubies, Columbian emeralds, Kashmir and Burma sapphires. His eye for luxury and elegance has helped him to acquire fine pieces from the Edwardian, Art Deco and Retro periods including the famous Bulgari emerald and diamond ring gifted to Elizabeth Taylor by Richard Burton on the set of Cleopatra.

Quiet Waters Dog Training Classes

Dog Training Classes at Quiet Waters Park will offer two dog training classes. The first eight-week series will begin on Saturday, August 30th, from 9:00 -10:00 a.m. and the second session on Saturday, September 6 from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Participants will learn how to train their dogs to be well behaved companions using positive, reward-based methods. Classes will be held on the grassy hill behind the Concert Stage. All dogs must be at least 4 months old and current on their vaccinations. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Quiet Waters Dog Park. Cost is $90.00 for eight lessons. Hills for the strong, straight-aways for the swift make this course fun and challenging. The 15K course runs through the USDA's Beltsville Agricultural Research Center and offers sights and scents of the outdoors, plus four refreshment stops to keep you hydrated. Cost is $23 and $5 of the entry fee is contributed to the "Girls Gotta Run Foundation", which supports young women athletes in Ethiopia.

Bates Legacy Center Inc. and the Northern Arundel Cultural Preservation Society Inc. will present a multi-media exhibition, "Trails, Tracks, Tarmac: Lives of African-Americans in the History and Culture of Northern Anne Arundel County, 1850 to the Present" from Sept. 2008 to Sept. 2009 at the Bates Legacy Center, 1101 Smithville St. The exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and by appointment on Sundays. This exhibition traces the history of African-American contributions and collections that proved influential to the development of Northern Anne Arundel County.
